Allerton Cushman Jr.
2011 Honoree
Volunteer
As a volunteer pastoral visitor in the Chaplaincy Department at Mass General, Allerton (Jay) Cushman ministers to patients with cancer. His humility, non-judgmental listening, common sense and compassion make him a valuable spiritual caregiver. With gentleness, humor and warmth, he is able to touch people as they face a very difficult disease.
Having lost a family member to cancer, Jay is capable of accompanying patients on their emotional roller coaster with understanding and strength. He has helped some patients plan their own memorial services. With great sensitivity, he has guided patients and their families through the transition from aggressive treatment to palliative care. He assists them as they struggle with their religious faith and cope with anger and grief.
A faithful presence on Tuesdays and Fridays over the last four years, Jay finds deep joy and satisfaction in his challenging role.
“Facing cancer, is by nature a spiritual journey,” says Jay’s mentor, Oncology Chaplain Katrina Scott, MDiv. “Jay’s quiet presence is a blessing to his colleagues and patients.”
