Jennifer A. Wargo, MD
2011 Honoree
Assistant Surgeon, Division of Surgical Oncology
A surgical oncologist at the Mass General Cancer Center, Jennifer Wargo, MD, often comes to know patients and their loved ones during the most difficult time in their lives.
Last November, when her athletic husband experienced speech loss after cycling 110 miles and running a half-marathon over two weekends, Sue Rees rushed him to their local hospital for a CT scan. This couple was stunned to learn he had a large brain lesion. Sue immediately brought him to Mass General, where he was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma.
“We met with Dr. Wargo, who was extraordinarily compassionate as she listened to us and explained our options,” says Sue. “She then spent seven hours removing an abdominal tumor that would have painfully and quickly ended my husband’s life.”
Dr. Wargo remained involved in his care until his death six months later. “Dr. Wargo’s care provided us with precious time,” says Sue. “I will be forever thankful for her gentle, thoughtful guidance during our nightmare of a journey. Jen Wargo is the best physician I have ever known.”
