Madeleine DeCarlo
2012 Honoree
Patient Service Coordinator
Madeleine De Carlo is a healing presence in her role as patient service coordinator for the gynecologic oncology practice in the Gillette Center for Gynecologic Oncology.
“My pleasure in seeing Madeleine cannot be underestimated,” writes patient Betsy Neisner. “I arrive at Mass General after a nearly three-hour drive from my home — a trip I’ve made many times since July 2002, when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
“Each time, I come with pent-up anxiety and a notebook full of questions for the doctor, preoccupied with the unpredictability of my disease, its three recurrences, my four courses of chemotherapy and the looming uncertainty about treatment when Doxil is no longer available. Yet my downward emotional spiral reverses as soon as I see Madeleine.
“Inexhaustibly cheerful in a gentle, encouraging way, Madeleine gives me a warm welcome. She attaches my ID bracelet loosely so that it slides off easily after my visit. She chats while we take care of the paperwork. Madeleine’s uncomplicated kindness recharges my good feelings and renews my focus on the positive.”
