Susan Asci
2011 Honoree
Founder, Charitable Organization, Healthcare Advocate
Journalist and author Susan Asci is a survivor of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), an aggressive disease that affects fewer than five percent of all patients with breast cancer.
Since her diagnosis 12 years ago, Susan founded a tumor registry, a support group and a nonprofit organization, IBC New England Region, Inc.
As president of the nonprofit, Susan has been an effective fundraiser and leader, recruiting a strong board and supporters who share her commitment to increasing advocacy, research and services on behalf of patients with IBC. Its comprehensive website brings together educational materials for patients and clinicians, making these resources readily accessible for the first time.
“Susan is a tireless advocate who provides hope as well as practical support to fellow patients with IBC,” says John Erban, MD, former director of clinical programs at Mass General’s Gillette Center for Breast Cancer. “While undergoing treatment and working full time, she has helped many others better understand and cope with this rare and virulent cancer. Susan’s courage, grace and optimism inspire all of us.”
